Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis- Foot Pain

 WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS?

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of foot and heel pain with runners and athletes. It involves pain and inflammation of those tissues that runs along the bottom of the foot connecting the heel bone to the toes. Plantar fasciitis is caused by biomechanical issues in the foot that eventually leads to repetitive stress or micro trauma of the plantar fascia. Plantar fasciitis can be described as a stabbing pain that usually happens with the 1st steps you take in the morning after which the pain lessens, but may return after long periods of standing or after getting up from a seated position.

WHY TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS HAVE NOT PRODUCED LONG

TERM BENEFIT FOR PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Plantar fasciitis can be a frustrating injury, with traditional treatments providing mixed results. Historically, traditional treatments such as anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, rest and ice are focused on reducing pain and not correcting the biomechanical problems causing the ongoing plantar fasciitis. A much higher success rate is achieved when the focus of care has addressed and corrected the imbalances of the foot and rest of the body.

WHAT IS ART OR ACTIVE RELEASE Technique?

ART is a soft tissue technique for treating injuries, pain, and scar tissue.

WHY DOES ACTIVE RELEASE WORK?

When a person has biomechanical gait issues or training flaws such as over-pronation, flat feet, Achilles tendon issues, or has increased repetitive training stress on the foot.  This repetitive stress creates three important changes in the soft tissues:

  • An acute condition in the foot (strains, pulls or tears)
  • An accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Less oxygen to the injured area

The end result is the buildup of scar tissue to the affected area. As scar tissue forms muscles and tendons become weaker and irritated, as well as nerve entrapments can occur. Active Release Technique (ART) will help

  • Breaks up the scar tissue
  • Increases the functional range of motion
  • Increases circulation to the damaged area

HOW WOULD I KNOW IF I HAVE PLANTAR FASCIITIS?

Patients often describe plantar fasciitis as follows:

  • Generally will cause and affect one foot more than the other, even though can have issues
  • The pain is usually developed over time
  • Sharp pain is felt generally towards the heel of the foot
  • At its worse first thing in the morning or during the first few steps after sitting for a long periods

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I THINK I HAVE PLANTAR FASCIITIS?

It is recommended that you inquire about ART if these symptoms are a part of your life.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us and ask at (215) 361-6130.
